The Specimen Processing Services Specialist I promotes and maintains effective and professional communication with patients, clients, co-workers and Fred Hutch colleagues. The Tech works efficiently to minimize patient wait times, performs specimen processing of blood specimens. Responsibilities may include transfusion support duties. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job in order to carry out the primary responsibilities. The specialist may be asked to cover alternative shifts or weekends as needed per staffing.



Responsibilities

    Performs specimen processing of blood specimens
  • Performs venipuncture phlebotomy on patients, donors, research participants and employees where required
  • Able to learn computer skills in a timely manner
  • Processes specimens including centrifugation, aliquoting, and dispensing specimens to proper lab processing and sendout sites
  • Participates in Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance programs and projects
  • Records variances of standard policies and procedures in Patient Safety Net accurately and where required
  • Responsible for receiving patients at the Alliance Laboratory for blood draw appointments and scheduling walk-in appointments
  • May be asked to cover alternative shifts or weekends as needed per staffing
  • Has the ability to work under pressure and adjust to changing workloads
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Meets attendance and punctuality expectations


Qualifications

Required:

  • High school graduation or the equivalent.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Proficient in the use of email, and data entry in a Windows-based environment

Preferred:

  • Completion of phlebotomy training course
  • Washington state MA/Phlebotomist certification (or sponsored by Fred Hutch if competency assessment and training are completed)
  • Preferred specimen handling and processing experience including accessioning, centrifuge, aliquoting, sendouts and blood banking
  • Preferred EPIC/Cadence, answering phones/handling phone inquiries from patients and staff

The hourly pay range for this position is from $23.32 to $33.20 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
